Successful co-parenting is important when it comes to cultivating a positive environment for the child. With that said, the custodial parent has certain responsibilities that they should adhere to. Custodial parents in Ohio may want to focus on these three core responsibilities.

The custodial parent will have the child living with them for most of the time and, therefore, have the majority of the responsibilities. However, this does not mean that the custodial parent should omit the non-custodial parent from being involved with important decision-making regarding the child. The non-custodial parent should always be included in meaningful decisions as this will ensure that both parents are on the same page.

When a custodial parent is awarded child custody, it’s important to develop a visitation schedule with the non-custodial parent. In addition, it’s important to adhere to this visitation schedule once set unless there is a particular reason a change is needed. In this case, the custodial parent should let the non-custodial parent know well in advance so that they can adjust to the new schedule.

Both custodial and non-custodial parents have a responsibility to do what’s in the best interest of the child to ensure their growth and development. This usually means placing the child’s needs above everything else and providing as stable a home environment as possible.

More specifically, with the support of an attorney, individuals can have someone on their behalf advocating for their interests, create an effective parenting plan, and protect the overall parent-child relationship
